
Getting a Handle on Halogen Infrared Lamps
If you need to move a lot of heat, fast, halogen infrared lamps are your best bet. Think of them as high-intensity heat emitters. We build them with a tungsten filament tucked inside a quartz tube and filled with a specific halogen gas mix. Why the gas? It keeps the filament from evaporating too quickly. That means we can crank up the temperature without the lamp just giving up and burning out. The Power Side of Things Here is the thing about voltage and wattage: they dictate how “dense” your heat is. If you’re running a long tube with high wattage, you have to be careful with your voltage specs so you don’t pull too much current. Most of the time, these are set up for industrial grids where stability is everything. Just a heads-up: high-wattage lamps hit hard. Make sure your power supplies can handle that initial “cold-start” surge, or you’re going to have a bad time. Materials and the “Small Stuff” We use hard quartz for the tubing because it doesn’t freak out when the temperature swings wildly. Depending on what you’re actually heating, we can add coatings to the quartz to tweak the heat spectrum or just keep the surface protected. Then there are the connectors—usually R7s or SK15. You want a tight, secure fit here. A loose connection isn’t just a nuisance; it creates a hot spot. And a hot spot will melt your socket. When you’re wiring these up, use the right torque. You don’t want to deal with an arc-over. Real-World Use and the Trade-offs You’ll see these all over the place in PET blowing, curing, and drying lines. They heat up almost instantly. It’s great because you can use PID controllers to keep your temperature zones exactly where you want them. But there’s a catch. Because they put out so much heat, your cooling fans and shields have to be up to the task. If your airflow is weak, the ambient heat just builds up and kills the lamp’s lifespan. It’s a simple trade-off: you get way faster cycle times, but you have to keep a close eye on the thermal load hitting your machine frame.
