
Let’s Talk About Halogen IR Quartz Tubes
Ever wonder why some heating lamps just last longer than others? It mostly comes down to what’s happening inside that glass. We use a tungsten filament tucked inside a high-purity quartz tube, but the secret sauce is a tiny bit of halogen gas. Without that gas, the tungsten would just evaporate and coat the inside of the glass in a cloudy film. The gas keeps the glass crystal clear, which means the heat keeps flowing and the lamp doesn’t burn out nearly as fast.
Getting the Power Right
Here is the thing about voltage: you have to be precise. If you push too much voltage into a lamp, the filament will snap almost instantly. Pop. Gone. But if you go too low, you won’t get the heat to penetrate the material you’re working on. You’ve got to match the wattage to the actual mass of whatever you’re heating. Just keep in mind that high-power tubes put out a massive amount of heat. If your cooling fans aren’t up to the task, you might find your housing warping. And nobody wants to deal with that.
Why Quartz?
We use quartz because it’s a beast when it comes to temperature swings. Imagine jumping from a chilly 20°C to a blistering 1000°C in a matter of seconds. Most glass would just shatter. Quartz doesn’t. When it comes to the ends, you’ll see things like R7s or SK15. These aren’t just random codes; they change how you actually wire the thing. For example, R7s is great because it’s a tension fit, making it a breeze to swap out when you’re in a hurry. Plus, if you go with a coated tube, it actually bounces certain wavelengths back into your workpiece. It’s a simple way to soak up more energy.
Real-World Use (and a Warning)
You’ll see these all over PET bottle blowing lines and powder coating setups. The best part? They hit operating temperature almost instantly. No waiting around for things to warm up. But there is a catch. Quartz is finicky. One single fingerprint or a smudge of oil on the glass creates a “hot spot.” That tiny spot of grime traps heat until the tube fails. It’s a frustrating way to kill a perfectly good lamp. Do yourself a favor:always wear gloves.
