Getting the Most Out of Shortwave Halogen Lamps
When you need heat—and you need it now—standard resistive elements just won’t cut it. That’s why we build our halogen lamps the way we do. We take a tungsten filament, tuck it inside a quartz envelope, and fill the whole thing with halogen gas. The result? The filament can run way hotter without just evaporating away. This pushes the heat into the shortwave spectrum, meaning it doesn’t just warm the air; it punches right through to the material you’re heating. It’s fast. Really fast. The nitty-gritty on power When you’re picking a lamp for your oven, it all comes down to the balance between voltage and wattage. We use high-voltage setups so you can cram more power into a smaller space. But here’s the thing: if you’re running a high-wattage tube, your current draw is going to spike. Make sure your power supply can handle those peaks. Otherwise, you’ll be tripping breakers every time you try to warm things up. Quartz and connections We use high-purity quartz because, frankly, anything else would warp under this kind of thermal stress. Then there are the connectors—usually R7s or SK15. We stick with these because they snap in tight. You don’t want a loose connection here. If it’s shaky, you’ll get arcing, which burns out the socket and kills the lamp. Simple as that. Plus, some of our tubes come with special coatings. They basically act like a mirror, bouncing the heat back toward your workpiece so you aren’t wasting energy. Real-world use (and the catch) If you’re doing PET blowing or running a rapid curing oven, these are your best bet. You hit your target temps in seconds, which keeps your cycle times lean. But there is a trade-off. Because the heat is so intense, the quartz is actually pretty fragile. One big warning:**don’t let your operators touch the glass with bare hands.**The oils from your skin create tiny hot spots on the tube. Once those spots form, the glass fails prematurely. Use gloves, or give them a quick clean with a solvent before you fire them up. It’ll save you a lot of headaches.
