Getting the Heat Right: Halogen Quartz Heaters in PET Blow Molding
When you’re blow molding PET, you’ve got a tricky balancing act. You need to get those preforms soft enough to shape, but if you’re not careful, you’ll melt the neck and ruin the whole batch. That’s why we lean on halogen quartz elements. Instead of waiting around for slow, drifting heat, these lamps use shortwave infrared. It hits the plastic wall instantly. It’s fast. Really fast.
The Power Side of Things
We don’t just pick a lamp at random. We look at how long the preform is and how fast you need the cycle to run. If we go with a higher voltage—say 400V—we can cram more wattage into a thinner filament. This gives you a much denser heat source and faster ramp-up times. But here’s the catch: if you’re stuffing a 2500W tube into a small space, you better have your cooling blowers dialed in. If you don’t, the heat soak will actually start warping your machine frames. Not a great look.
The Secret Sauce: Halogen and Quartz
The quartz glass is there to keep the tungsten filament from oxidizing. But the real magic is the halogen gas inside. As the filament gets hot, some of the tungsten evaporates. Normally, that would just thin out the wire until it snaps. The halogen gas grabs that evaporated tungsten and pushes it right back onto the filament. It basically heals itself, so the lamps last way longer before burning out. When it comes to the plugs, we stick with R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re standard industrial sockets, so they just slide right in. But make sure they’re tight. A loose connection causes arcing, and that will fry your socket in a matter of hours.
A Few Tips for the Shop Floor
These heaters are great for high-speed runs because they react instantly. You can use SCR controllers to tweak the heat on the fly so nothing gets scorched. Just remember: quartz is fragile. I mean really fragile. If you touch the glass with your bare hands, the oil from your fingerprints creates a “hot spot.” When the lamp heats up, that one spot expands differently than the rest of the glass, and pop—the tube cracks under the stress. Do yourself a favor: grab some IPA and wipe them down clean before you wire them up. Your future self will thank you.
