Getting Your PET Preform Heating Right with Halogen Lamps
If you’re running a PET blowing machine, you know it all comes down to heat. You need that preform soft enough to hit the mold perfectly, but you don’t want to waste time or power. That’s why we stick with short-wave halogen lamps. Instead of just heating up the air around the plastic, these lamps push the heat directly into the PET. It’s faster. It’s cleaner. The Deal with Voltage and Power Here’s the thing about voltage: it’s not just a number on a spec sheet. Most of our lamps run between 230V and 400V because you need that raw wattage to get the plastic to its glass transition temperature in a matter of seconds. But you’ve got to make sure your power supply actually matches the lamp. If you under-volt the tube, you lose that heat density. And when that happens? You end up with thin walls or weird, uneven bottle shapes. Nobody wants that. Quartz and Quick Swaps We use high-purity quartz for the tubes. Why? Because these things go through a brutal cycle of heating up and cooling down, and quartz can handle that thermal shock without cracking. Some of our lamps even have a special coating. It basically tweaks the infrared spectrum so the energy hits the plastic exactly where it’s absorbed best. As for the connections, we use R7s or Sk15 bases. They’re the industry standard for a reason. When a lamp finally burns out, you can just pop it out and slide a new one in. No need to spend your afternoon rewiring the whole oven. A Few Things to Watch Out For These lamps are pretty easy to drop into most standard PET ovens. They don’t take up much space, but they put out a massive amount of heat. And that’s where you have to be careful. Keep your reflectors spotless. If dust or oxidation builds up, your efficiency tanks. To make up for it, the lamps have to run even hotter, which just kills their lifespan faster. Plus, double-check your cooling fans. You need enough airflow around the housings, otherwise, you’re risking melting your sockets. It’s a small detail, but it saves you a huge headache later.
